How to wind a 12v 30ampere transformer with output of 120v to v240
A home made 12 volt 30 amp transformer winding 150 AH to 300 AH battery charger cum 500VA inverter transformer ( output 120V and 230V AS your required )
WHAT IS A TRANSFORMER?
A TRANSFORMER IS induction device that transfer electric energy from one electric circuit to another or to multiple circuits using the principles electromagnetism.
A transfomer can eaither convert DC to AC sparks or vice versa (AC to DC) by rectification. The Principle of a working/operation of a transformer is commonly inductance between two circuits which is linked by a common magnetic flux. A basic transformer consists of two coils that are electrically separate and inductive, but are magnetically linked through a path of reluctance.

Transformer Operation/Working
Requirements for making a Transformer:
Copper coated wire
Plastic bobbin
Nuts, bolts and washer is required if the Core has Nut Holes.
According to Faraday's calcation, A volt induced on secondary has magnitude depending on Turn ratio of Transformer. That's if the secondary turn is half the primary turn, then the secondary voltage will be increase by half of primary voltage. Likewise, if the secondary turn is double the primary turns, then secondary volt will be double of the primary volt.
Power Ratio
To get the accurate calcution for Numbers of turns per volt. Simply use App to calculate it.
Transformer Ratio
- VP = the primary voltage.
- IP = the primary current.
- VS = the secondary voltage.
- IS = the secondary current.
- NP = the number of turns in the primary winding.
- NS = the number of turns in the secondary winding.
Volts per Turn.
If we build a transformer with primary winding of 2000 turns and a secondary winding of 200 turns has a turns ratio of 2000:200 or 10:1. Therefore 200 volts applied to the primary will produce a secondary voltage of 20 volts.
Another way to consider transformer voltages is by volts/turn; if the 200 volts applied to the 2000 turn primary produces 200/2000 = 0.1 volts per turn, then each single turn on the 200 turn secondary winding will produce 0.1V so the total secondary voltage will be 200 × 0.1V = 20v.
This method is also applicable in finding the values of voltage appearing across individual tappings of an autotransformer when the number of turns per tapping is known.
Simply divide the total voltage across the whole winding by the total number of turns, and multiply this result by the number of turns in the particular tapping.
Note:
Stepped up: A transformer that increases voltage from primary to secondary (Primary turns greater than secondary turns).
Step down: A transformer having more decrease voltage from primary to secondary (Numbers of secondary turns greater than the primary)
I recommend use 1:10 of every turn.ie for every primary turns secondary should be times ten of it.
I hope with the video clip above you should have little glimpse on how to make a power DC to AC Transformer.
Transformer can be use in making an inverter, DC charger. All want you need is little modification. Like charge transformer for instance: has to be design using step down transformer to be Compactible on volt, Ampere of the battery pack .
I urge you to Keep on practicing make alot of DIY transformer for yourself. A day will come when you become experts after several trails.
